Strength training. It's something we are all told we need to do, but why?
There are both physical and mental benefits to strength training. When I first think of physical benefits I immediately go to the way I look. However it is much bigger than that. Here is a simple list:
PHYSICAL
Boosts metabolism - Who doesn't want that??
Improves balance & stability - This is especially important as we age.
Strengthens bones - Combats osteoporosis, reduces the likelihood of fractures
Supports joint health - weight lifting strengthens the muscles, tendons and ligaments around your joints and can reduce pain and prevent injury
Reduces chronic disease risk - heart disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers
MENTAL
Helps fight anxiety and depression - this includes sleep and cognitive function and memory
Increases independence- enough said
Two to Three sessions a week is all you need to gain all of these benefits. One thing I have always loved about 312 Fit is that if you are lifting 6lbs or 60lbs, it doesn't matter. You are part of a group that is cheering you on while you are becoming stronger.
It is an investment to join a small group fitness gym however you see above how much that investment is worth it.
